Monterey Peninsula Voices’ history extends back to the early 1960’s. Created in 1962 as the Monterey Peninsula College Community Chorus by symphony conductor John Gosling, the group had a more classical focus for the first 15 years as it continued with symphonic leaders at the helm. Forming its own non-profit in 1965, the chorus became known as the Monterey Peninsula Choral Society, the legal name to this day. Lighter musical fare began in the late 1980’s when local music director Barney Hulse took over. Broadway show tunes, pop tunes, folk songs and other musical styles continued under conductors Linda Taylor Keill, Jeff Green and Desma Johnson. Soon after, Sean Boulware was hired as conductor in 2011. The group then re-branded to simply Monterey Peninsula Voices (MPV), though the choir has welcomed members beyond the Peninsula from throughout the tri-county area. In 2020 and 2021, due to Covid-related shutdowns, MPV created virtual concerts with members from as far away as New York and Australia.
